Creating and Submitting a Google SiteMap

A colleague recently asked:  "What is the easiest way to create a sitemap for submission to Google?"  I don't know if it's the best or the easiest way to do it, but this is my procedure and it's worked quite well for many of my client's websites.

  1. Build your sitemap here:  http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/
    • Input URL
    • Set change frequency to how often you think you’ll be updating the site (don’t put “daily” if you’ll only update it monthly)
    • Last modification:  leave as is
    • Priority: set it to .7 or .8
    • Click Start
    • After the sitemap is generated, right click on the first link on the results page (the link that ends in sitemap.xml) and save it to hard drive
  2. FTP the sitemap.xml file to the web server’s root directory
  3. Login to your Google webmaster account and add the new site and sitemap to it.  If you don't already have an account, start here:  http://www.google.com/webmasters/start/
  4. In my experience, Google normally spiders the site within a week or so

It's pretty quick and easy once you've done a few.
